- 1970: Prince Sihanouk is overthrown - This event is particularly important as once he is overthrown, the Prince joins forces with the Khmer Rouge, allowing the group to rapidly gain strength
- April 17, 1975: Khmer Rouge takes Phnom Penh - This event officially begins the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia and ignites the forced removes to rural centers and labor/death camps
- 1976: As most of the urban dwellers have been removed to rural centers, massive starvation and disease begin to settle into the Cambodian population. Most of the purges have begun and the death toll rises.
- 1979: Vietnamese troops invade Phnom Penh and overthrow Khmer Rouge, prompting the slow crumble of the Khmer Rouge regime and the slow process of Cambodian reconstruction
